Abstract:
It has been 60 years since the first practical photovoltaic devices demonstration in the 1950s. Last year, Solexel announced the world-record efficiency for a production-format (156mm x 156mm) thin‐crystalline‐silicon solar cell as certified by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). In this talk, I will describe the advances that occurred in recent years that have enabled the successful R&D of thin film optoelectronic devices. I will also describe the challenges that must be overcome to continue commercialization and consider the potential markets which would open up to this technology. I will conclude with enabling elimination the trade-off between performance and cost in photovoltaics

Biographical Sketch:
Bin Zhou is manager of the research and development of Solexel Inc in Silicon Valley, USA.  He has co-authored over 15 high impact peer-reviewed journal papers and holds 5 patents related to optoelectronic devices.  He received his bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Shandong University, did his master research at Bremen University of Germany from 2007-2009 and obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from State University of New York-University at Buffalo of USA in 2012. Prior to joining Solexel Inc, he was a senior research scientist at KLA-Tencor (the leading semiconductor inspection corporation), and at the Seagate Technology Corporation (the largest data storage company in the world) and at Wright-Patterson Air Force Research Laboratory.

Dr. Zhou’s research is primarily focused on semiconductor process, thin film photo detector and thin film photovoltaics. He is developing new materials and techniques for fabricating ultra-sensitive low cost photo detector and high efficiency low cost thin film photovoltaics.
