ABSTRACT – Optical fiber communication systems operating at 40 Gb/s and beyond has been an interest in both industry and academy for more than 10 years. The current proliferation of video contents in the Internet and wireless networks has been driving the current optical fiber networks closer and closer to their capacity limit. As a result, higher spectral efficiency becomes more desired by carriers and service providers. This talk focuses on waveform level modeling and simulation of 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s systems involving transceivers with both intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) and phase modulation-incoherent and coherent detection. After a brief introduction to optical fiber communication systems and the optical fiber channel, I explain the evolution of the technology from big optics to big electronics in optical transceivers, with emphasis on recent development of digital signal processing technologies for dual polarization QPSK (DP-QPSK) systems. Performance measures, such as eye opening, Q-factor and bit error rate (BER) are discussed, and we propose an efficient method for the simulation of short optical pulses propagating through the long optical fiber. Due to time limitation, both detailed modeling of Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and Raman amplifiers will be omitted.
The other focus of the talk is on system design principles and tradeoffs. I will use several system design examples to demonstrate the core R&D process in industry and to illustrate the importance of modeling and simulation in system design.

Short Bio – Dr. Zhang received his B. S. degree in Optoelectronics from the Department of Optoelectronics and M.S. degree in Solid State Physics from the Institute of Crystal Materials, respectively in 1993 and 1996, all from Shandong University. His M.S. thesis advisor is Professor Dong Xu. After one year stay as a Ph.D. student with the Department of Physics at the University of Virginia (UVa), he started the Ph.D. thesis research in system aspects of fiber optic communications under the direction of Professor Maite Brandt-Pearce in the ECE Department of the UVa in 1997. He received his Ph.D. in May 2001. Since August 2000, Dr. Zhang have worked full time in fiber optic communications systems vendors such as PhotonEx, Corvis, and Tyco Telecommunications, mainly on modeling (including experimental validation), simulation and design of 10-40 Gb/s ultra-long-haul DWDM subsystems and systems. In August 2006, Dr. Zhang left industry and joined the ECET Department of the Minnesota State University Mankato as an Assistant Professor. In August 2009 he received an early promotion to the rank of Associate Professor. Dr. Zhang was awarded tenure in 2011. During 2011, Dr. Zhang was on leave from his university and worked as a Principal Engineer at Oclaro Inc, working on system level modeling and design of 40G and 100G DP-QPSK transponders. In 2012 he continues to work as a consulting engineer for the Technology Office of Oclaro.  Dr. Zhang has authored more than 30 technical publications.
